Hearing testing

CALL NOW: 470-485-4327

Or provide your information below and we'll contact you!

The purpose of an audiological evaluation is to test how well you can hear. During a hearing test, Dr. Wikoff will review your symptoms, measure the softest sounds audible for tones of different frequencies and assess your ability to discriminate different words in quiet and in background noise. Dr. Wikoff will then review your results and if necessary, create a customized and enjoyable rehabilitation plan. Peachtree Hearing’s primary focus is to help you preserve and enhance your sense of hearing. In fact, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association recommends that adults have a hearing screening at least every decade up to age 50, and at three-year intervals thereafter.  For more detailed information on what to expect during your hearing test see below.

Your Hearing Test: What to Expect

Here’s what you can expect during your appointment for a hearing test at Peachtree Hearing.

When you arrive at Peachtree Hearing you will be greeted and brought to our comfortable and fun waiting room.  While waiting you will be asked to complete a survey concerning your medical history.  Your audiologist, Dr. Melissa Wikoff, will then perform a thorough audiological evaluation, which includes the following:

Video-Otoscopic Examination
We will inspect your ear canal with a tiny video camera which allow us to see the inside of your ear with great detail. You can watch the TV screen and we will explain what you’re seeing while we perform a complete visual evaluation of your ear canal and ear drum. We will help identify if your ear canal is being blocked by wax or another obtrusive element that could be affecting your hearing.  If your ear canal is blocked by earwax or another foreign object, Dr. Wikoff is professionally trained to clean your ear while keeping you as comfortable as possible.

Familiar Voice Test
If you are able to bring your spouse or a loved one with you to your appointment, we can then check your hearing and speech understanding using a tested and proven method employing their voice.

Speech Understanding Assessment
During this test we will test to see how well you are hearing conversational speech both in quiet and in the presence of background noise. Any areas of difficulty in speech understanding will be detected and help with the overall diagnosis and treatment.

Baseline Audiogram
This is the part of the test where you will step inside our sound proof booth and we will test your hearing using different tones at different frequencies.  Using our high-tech audiometer you will indicate through a button when you are hearing particular sounds.  This will allow us to scientifically plot out your hearing in accordance with clinical standards.  The baseline audiogram then shows us which sounds you’re hearing and which sounds you’re not.

Test Results
Dr. Wikoff will review your complete hearing test results with you and determine the best course of action, if any. Should hearing aids be required, Dr. Wikoff will discuss your lifestyle, cosmetic concerns and budget needs to determine the best solution for you. Peachtree Hearing works with hearing aids that are custom-programmed to match your hearing loss and lifestyle.  Much like eyeglasses have a custom prescription to match your vision, hearing aids must be configured specially for you.  Often times Dr. Wikoff is able to custom-program a pair of hearing aids for you to try right in the office and hear the difference they make!
